Starting Up Your Device — Trézor®
A concise, practical presentation-style guide to safely set up your Trézor hardware wallet. Use this as a handout, slide content, or a printable quick-start.
Overview
This guide walks you through the first-time setup, essential security steps, transferring funds, and basic troubleshooting. Follow official instructions from Trézor and always use the official app (Trezor Suite) when performing critical actions.
Before you start
What you need
- Your Trézor device (Model T or Model One)
- A computer or phone with web access
- Official USB cable included with the device
- A pen and the Recovery Seed Card (or secure paper)
Quick safety checks
- Inspect the box and device for tamper signs.
- Only use official downloads and the official start page.
- Never share your recovery seed or enter it on an internet-connected computer except when performing an allowed recovery on the device itself.
Step-by-step setup (15-minute quick start)
1. Open the official start page or download Trezor Suite
Go to the official Trézor start page or install the Trezor Suite desktop app for the recommended experience. The official start page will guide you to the best option for your platform.
2. Connect the device
Plug in your Trézor using the supplied cable. Follow the on-screen prompts in Trezor Suite or the web app.
3. Install firmware
New devices are shipped without firmware. Install the official firmware when prompted. The firmware install is performed through Trezor Suite and the device screen will guide you.
4. Create a new wallet & set a PIN
- Choose "Create new" wallet on the device/app.
- Pick a PIN you will remember — it protects the device locally.
5. Write down your recovery seed
Write your recovery seed exactly as presented on the device, in order, on the supplied Recovery Seed Card (or another secure medium). Store it offline in a safe place. This seed is the only way to recover funds if the device is lost.
Security — the most important steps
Keep the seed offline
Never photograph, copy to cloud storage, or share your seed phrase. Treat it like the keys to a safe deposit box.
Update firmware regularly
Install official firmware updates from Trezor Suite to patch security issues and gain features.
Use strong physical custody
Consider a home safe, deposit box, or geographically separated copies for long-term storage — but be mindful of splitting seeds only with a secure plan.
Moving coins — basic workflow
- Create receiving addresses in Trezor Suite and confirm them on the device screen before sharing.
- Send small test amounts first when transferring from exchanges.
- Use supported wallets or Trezor Suite for coin-specific features.
Troubleshooting & support
Common issues
- Device not recognized — try a different USB port/cable, and check OS permissions.
- Firmware install fails — ensure a stable connection and retry via Trezor Suite.
- Forgot PIN — recovery requires your seed; keep it safe.
